Why Skardu
Skardu is the capital of Baltistan and the starting point for K2 and the Baltoro Glacier. Even without trekking, it has some of the most varied scenery in the north.
Top places
Shangrila Resort and Lower Kachura Lake, Upper Kachura Lake, Satpara Lake, the Katpana and Sarfaranga cold deserts, Shigar Fort and Manthokha Waterfall in Kharmang are all within a few hours' drive.
Getting there
Daily flights from Islamabad take about an hour but depend on the weather. By road, Skardu is about five to six hours from Gilgit on the Jaglot-Skardu road.
