Fairy Meadows Travel Guide: How to Reach Nanga Parbat's Meadow

Fairy Meadows is an alpine meadow at about 3,300 metres facing the Raikot Face of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the ninth-highest mountain in the world. You reach it from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway with a jeep ride to Tato village and then a hike of two to three hours. The best time to visit is June to September, and two nights is the minimum to enjoy it.

How to get to Fairy Meadows

  • Drive to Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, about 80 km south of Gilgit and a long day from Islamabad via the Babusar Pass in summer.
  • Change to a local jeep at Raikot Bridge. The narrow, unpaved road to Tato takes about an hour and is driven only by licensed local jeep drivers.
  • Walk from the end of the road to Fairy Meadows in two to three hours on a well-used trail. Ponies are available for luggage or for riders.
Reach Raikot Bridge by midday so you can make the jeep ride and the hike in daylight. Leave large bags in your vehicle and carry only what you need for the meadow.

Where to stay

Accommodation is simple: wooden cabins and camping run by local families, with shared or basic private bathrooms. Electricity and mobile signal are limited, so bring a power bank and download maps before you leave. In July and August book ahead, as the best-placed cabins fill early.

The hike to Beyal Camp and Nanga Parbat Base Camp

From Fairy Meadows, a gentle forest walk of about an hour leads to Beyal Camp. Fit hikers continue to the viewpoint and the Nanga Parbat (Raikot) Base Camp at around 4,000 metres, a full day out and back of six to eight hours. Start early, carry water and turn back if the weather closes in.

Best time to visit Fairy Meadows

June to September is the season, with green meadows and clear morning views of Nanga Parbat. May and October are possible but colder, and cabins may be closed. In winter the jeep road and the trail are under snow.
