Skardu is one of Northern Pakistan's most rewarding destinations, and the right season can shape the whole feeling of a trip. The valley is different in every month: lush and vibrant in summer, luminous in autumn, and dramatic under snow in winter.
Summer: the classic Skardu season
From May to September, Skardu offers the easiest conditions for sightseeing, lake visits and road journeys. The weather is typically warm during the day, with cooler evenings. This is the most popular period for families, couples and first-time visitors who want to see Shangrila, Upper Kachura, Shigar Fort and the surrounding valleys without winter constraints.

Autumn: dramatic landscapes, fewer crowds
September and October are excellent if you want a quieter experience and crisp mountain views. The air turns clearer, and the valleys glow under warm light. Many travellers prefer autumn for photography or longer road trips through Deosai and Shigar.
“Skardu becomes especially cinematic in autumn, when the light is gentler and the mountains feel even more distant and monumental.”
Winter: for snow, stillness and adventure
If you are travelling for snow, winter photography or a quiet retreat, Skardu can be magical between December and February. Roads may close or slow during intense weather, so this is best for flexible itineraries and travellers comfortable with a more adventurous schedule.
