Know the heights

Khunjerab Pass is 4,693 m and Deosai averages about 4,100 m. Most people feel the thin air above 3,000 m.

Go slowly

Spend a night or two at middle altitude, such as Hunza or Skardu, before going higher. Drink plenty of water and avoid heavy exertion on the first day.

Warning signs

Headache, nausea, dizziness and breathlessness at rest are signs of altitude sickness. If they get worse, go down. Seek medical help for confusion or severe breathlessness.
