Gilgit-Baltistan Weather by Month: When to Visit Hunza, Skardu and Fairy Meadows

Gilgit-Baltistan lies in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, so it stays much drier than the rest of Pakistan during the monsoon. Temperatures depend on altitude: valley floors such as Gilgit get hot in July, while Deosai and the passes stay cold even in summer.

Month by month

  • January to February: deep winter. Valleys reachable, frozen lakes, high passes closed, frequent flight cancellations.
  • March: thaw begins; late March brings the first apricot blossom in lower Hunza. Navroz is celebrated on 21 March.
  • April: peak cherry and apricot blossom in Hunza and Nagar. Mild days, cold nights.
  • May: green valleys and comfortable sightseeing; Khunjerab Pass usually opens for travel.
  • June: Babusar Pass and Deosai open; trekking season starts; Fairy Meadows becomes accessible.
  • July: peak trekking and climbing season; hot valley floors; Shandur Polo Festival in early July. Watch for landslides after rain.
  • August: wildflowers on Deosai; best month for K2, Gondogoro La and Snow Lake. Some flood risk after storms.
  • September: clear skies, fewer crowds, excellent for photography and treks.
  • October: golden poplars and orchards in Hunza from mid to late October; cold nights.
  • November: early winter; autumn colour lingers into early November; Babusar and Deosai close.
  • December: snow season; quiet, cold and beautiful for flexible travellers.
