Shigar and Khaplu: The Royal Forts of Baltistan

Shigar Fort

Shigar Fort was the seat of the Amacha rulers of Shigar and has been restored as a museum and heritage stay. Its carved wooden balconies and gardens give a feel of old Baltistan.

Khaplu Palace and Chaqchan Mosque

Khaplu, east of Skardu on the Shyok river, is known for its 19th-century palace and the Chaqchan Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the region.

Planning

Both valleys are easy day trips from Skardu, but staying a night in each lets you see them without a rush.
