K2 Base Camp Trek: Complete Guide to Route, Season, Permits and Cost

The K2 Base Camp trek is a 14 to 21 day round trip from Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, following the Baltoro Glacier from the village of Askole to Concordia and the foot of K2 (8,611 m), the second-highest mountain on Earth. The trekking season runs from mid-June to late August, a licensed guide and trekking permit are required for foreign visitors, and the trek suits fit hikers with multi-day trekking experience rather than technical climbers.

Why the K2 trek is different

Few treks put you this close to so many giants. From Concordia, the glacier junction often called the throne room of the mountain gods, you can see K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrum group and Mitre Peak in a single panorama. Four of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks stand within a day's walk. There are no lodges on the route: every night is in a tent, supported by a cook, porters and mules.

The route, stage by stage

Most itineraries start and end in Islamabad and use Skardu as the base. Walking times below are typical for a steady pace and change with conditions on the glacier.

  • Skardu to Askole (about 3,000 m): a long jeep drive of six to eight hours through the Shigar and Braldu valleys.
  • Askole to Jhola and Paiju (about 3,400 m): two days on the valley trail beside the Braldu River, with a rest day at Paiju for acclimatisation.
  • Paiju to Urdukas (about 4,000 m): the first day on the Baltoro Glacier, with views of the Trango and Cathedral towers.
  • Urdukas to Goro II (about 4,300 m) and Concordia (about 4,600 m): two days into the heart of the Karakoram, with Masherbrum and Gasherbrum IV ahead.
  • Concordia to K2 Base Camp (about 5,000 m) and back: a full, demanding day out past Broad Peak Base Camp to the Gilkey Memorial.
  • Return the same way to Askole, or cross the Gondogoro La (about 5,600 m) to Hushe if you are fit and the pass is in condition.

Best time to trek to K2 Base Camp

Mid-June to late August is the window. Before June the upper glacier is still snow-covered and the Gondogoro La is rarely passable; by September the weather turns colder and many teams have left. July is the busiest month, when the K2 climbing expeditions are on the mountain. Expect warm, dusty days in the lower valley and nights below freezing at Concordia.

Permits, guides and rules

The Baltoro lies inside the Central Karakoram National Park and close to a restricted border zone. Foreign trekkers need a trekking permit arranged through a licensed Pakistani tour operator, and must trek with a licensed guide; independent trekking is not allowed on this route. The operator also pays the national park fees and registers porters. Pakistani nationals have simpler requirements but still need the park entry and a guide or porter team.

Apply for the trek at least two months ahead. Your operator needs a copy of your passport and Pakistani visa to file the permit, and the briefing at the tourism office in Islamabad or Skardu happens before you fly north.

How hard is the K2 Base Camp trek?

It is a strenuous, non-technical trek. Days are five to eight hours over moraine, loose rock and glacier ice, and you spend more than a week above 4,000 metres. You do not need climbing skills for the classic return route, but you should be comfortable hiking several consecutive days with a day pack and have trekked at altitude before. The Gondogoro La crossing adds fixed ropes, an early-morning start and real exposure, so it is only for experienced trekkers.

  • Train for three months with long hill walks and stair or step sessions carrying 8 to 10 kg.
  • Plan at least one rest day at Paiju and one at Concordia; most altitude problems come from going up too fast.
  • Bring a four-season sleeping bag, broken-in boots, gaiters, glacier glasses and a warm down jacket.

How much does the K2 Base Camp trek cost?

Prices vary mainly with what is included. Published 2026 prices from local Pakistani operators start at around US$1,500 for a trek-only package from Skardu and rise to roughly US$1,800 to US$2,700 for a full package from Islamabad with hotels, flights or road transfers and all meals. International operators that bring their own leaders typically charge US$3,300 to US$5,000 or more. When comparing quotes, check whether permits, park fees, porter insurance, the Skardu flight and the Gondogoro La option are included.
